Nowadays, we are more capable of control the natural enviroment for our own good, but , the step of developing technology never stops. What is the purpose of humankind struggling to find new technology? Are we trying to be capable as god to control our destiny? This question reminds me of the article Genetic Turning Points: The Ethics of Human Genetic Intervention written by Peterson, James. Here is an quote from the article:
The question for any technology is, how can we develop this to best love God and our neighbors? Asking that question is not trying to be God; it is following God’s orders, fulfilling a God-give mandate to maximize our service while we are here. Such development and intervention is not playing God. It is fulfilling a God-give mandate to serve. Whether our current physical nature is a starting point God intends us to improve upon, broken in the devastation of the fall, or both, it is clear the we could be physically better. We are responsible to do the best we can with what we have. As God’s people we are being created, redeemed, and transformed by God. Part of our calling is to participate in that process by sustaining, restoring, and improving what has been temporarily entrusted to us.
He is saying that developing technology is the mission, given by God, that we have to execute from beginning to end. We, as a human, that have the obligation to improve ourself to stand longer. In order to achieve the self-perfection, I find that developing technology is inevitable, and this probably is the best answer that I am looking for the purpose and motivation of developing technology. -
I have researched the history of technology on the wikipedia. It says that the history of technology is almost as old as the history of humankind. Primitive tools have been discovered with almost every find at ancient human remains. However, the purpose and motivation of developing technology at the very beginning is simple; People created the simple and crude tools in order to satisfy their basic demands. Their motivation like an animal’s was from their instinct to survive in the natural environment. However, it will be too farfetched, if we use this definition to describe the motivation of technology because in my mind technology should be something that is more artificial than instinctive.
Shift the time period to the industrial revolution, the technology boomed because of the innovation of sicencn and engineering. The motivation and purpose of developing technology is reformed. People consider more about development of economics rather than make the living. When people are statisfied their basic demand, they start to pursue the efficiency, convenience and abundance. Many things in that period became artifical and mechanical. -
What is Technology?
Technology is the process by which humans modify nature to meet their needs and wants. Most people, however, think of technology in terms of its artifacts: computers and software, aircraft, pesticides, water-treatment plants, birth-control pills, and microwave ovens, to name a few. But technology is more than these tangible products. Technology includes all of the infrastructure necessary for the design, manufacture, operation, and repair of technological artifacts, from corporate headquarters and engineering schools to manufacturing plants and maintenance facilities. The knowledge and processes used to create and to operate technological artifacts -- engineering know-how, manufacturing expertise, and various technical skills -- are equally important part of technology. Technology is a product of engineering and science, the study of the natural world. Science has two parts: (1) a body of knowledge that has been accumulated over time and (2) a process-scientific inquiry-that generates knowledge about the natural world. Engineering, too, consists of a body of knowledge-in this case knowledge of the design and creation of human-made products-and a process for solving problems. Science aims to understand the "why" and "how" of nature, engineering seeks to shape the natural world to meet human needs and wants. Engineering, therefore, could be called "design under constraint," with science-the laws of nature-being one of a number of limiting factors engineers must take into account. Other constraints include cost, reliability, safety, environmental impact, ease of use, available human and material resources, manufacturability, government regulations, laws, and even politics. In short, technology necessarily involves science and engineering.

I ask myself: in this universe, does technology only exist in the physical or the material world? Does the mental world also can have some forms of technology? I tried to find the answer in Sophie's World, an illuminative book of philosophy that written by Jostein Gaarder. In this book, many philosophers had pointed out that, outside of the physical world, there is a mental world exsiting in the Universe. Among all of the philosophers, Descartes' opinion might explain my assumption. He thinks the world has two entities, which he calls it dualistic. One of the entities belongs to our mentality. The other entity, which is the material world, is referred as "extension". He thinks that any material or artificial object is the extension of our mental world. For example, people created wheels because people know round shape can reduce the friction since it has less touch area with the ground. People invented the hot air balloon because they know that the heated air always goes up. In a word, it means that there is always an idea before a certain invention is made up. Can we say the idea is also a form of technology? Can we also say that the method and knowledge that can help us to solve the math problem is also a form of technology?

What is "Techonology"? As a student of Georgia Insitute of Technology, I find that a deeper understanding of this question will not only help me understand what I am studying in this school, but also tell me how the knowledge we are going to learn will affect the world. That is why I am interested in this research.
This seems to be an easy question, since we use technology everyday in our lives. However, we cannot find the best words to define what is techonology. It is really a broad concept, which might have thousands of explainations since there are thousands of different kinds of technologies that serve for thousands of fields. They each have different uses. We cannot just say technology builds the automobile which makes humans travel faster or technology accelerates manufacturing and improves the quality of our lives. It will not be comprehensive enough to think about the meaning of technology in only a few words.
I asked my roomate, who is a student in Computer Science department about this question. He thinks technology is "the gradual evolution of human achievment usually manifesting itself in the form of mechanical or industrial creations." I also have asked someone in the architecture department, and he says "technology makes the world modernized and civilized." These are great answers for the question, but finding one exclusive definition will be hard. Everyone has a different point of view on technology by relating their own background and experience.
However, this problem is significant to discuss, especially for people nowdays. Humans become more proficient in developing technology. One cannot make technological breakthoughs without grasping the idea of technology and how it is used in our modern world. -
毕业了。虽然身心都已经很疲惫,我还是按难住想回家的心情和父母一起去旅行。虽然只是毕业后的旅行,但是由于日程安排得很紧,途中基本都是走马观花,人也搞得非常紧张和疲倦。
在华盛顿,我走了一天,灰色的天空一直下着雨,闷热的空气使得人在疲惫之外更显烦躁。夜幕降临,拖着最后一丝力气,终于回到了旅馆。本是急切像回到房间的心却一下子被一阵琴声留在了大厅里。那是一段轻快明亮的Jazz,给这沉闷的夏夜带来了一丝清凉.我随着琴声来到了lounge,找了一个能足够听清琴声但却不被弹奏着发现的角落,一个人静静地聆听.在柔和的灯光下,我看到了琴者的身影.那是一个70岁左右的老人,头发已经花白,但梳得非常整齐. 他身材非常单薄. 左臂甚至有些畸形,比一般的钢琴演奏者向外弯得更厉害,可以说是有些夸张,也不知是不是长年练习导致的结果. 他着装十分干净,穿着一套白色亚麻制的西服和一双棕色的宽头皮鞋. 皮鞋上的皱着显然说明它已有些年数了. 他带着一副眼镜,度数似乎很深,镜片又大又圆的,给人一种40年代的感觉.
老人那看上去有些别扭的姿势丝毫没有影响他的手在琴键上的纵横自由,那不紧不慢的双手总能在琴键上弹奏出饱满明亮的音色.jazz钢琴的韵律使得每一个音符出现的时机都令人捉摸不透却又恰到好处.lounge里的人们高兴却低声地交谈着,不是还传来酒杯碰撞的声音,这一切都与琴声融合在一起,营造出了一个完美的气氛. 在温暖的灯光下,老人的每一个动作和轮廓都给我一种犹太人的钢琴师的气质. 优雅,潇洒但却又很孤独. 他一首接着一首的弹着,丝毫没有在意周围的动静. 和他作伴的似乎只有钢琴而已,时而像是和他玩着游戏,时而又像替他讲着故事,时而又像陪他聊着天. 我被这种气质给深深吸引住了,每次他弹完一首曲子我都像为他鼓掌,但又怕惊扰了他和钢琴的两人世界. 于是,我还是在角落离,静静地欣赏,默默地为他喝彩.
这时,lounge里走进一对情侣,他们坐在了离钢琴最近的沙发上,引起了老人的注意. 也许是触景生情, 轻快的旋律马上变得暧昧缠绵起来. 琴声像是一个人独白一样,抒发的只是老人的回忆和情绪. 而对于我们这些听众来说, 感受着的只不过是老人深沉的心灵罢了. 这种感受能让人的心情达到沉淀,能让人的思绪变得丰富.
随着最后一个音符的消逝,老人似乎要离开了. 他不紧不慢地合上琴盖,收拾着泛黄的乐谱. 人们鼓掌向他致敬,老人绅士地向每一个人回礼.这时,老人露出了笑容,那是一个能让时间凝固的笑容,宁静,安祥.凝固的时间让这一幕变得经典,就像留声机里的老唱片,纪录的是永恒的经典...

After finishing the model, I have compare today's campus with the plan which was made by the architectural company 20 years ago.I think today's campus is better.
It is great for school to keep and restore Kingsley since it is one of the oldest building in the campus. Its historical value has been preserved and it is still used as the science labartory of Worcester Academy.
It is also great for school to preserve the squad, which is the most beatiful sight in campus. The wide squad gives the school more green color and more open space for the students and faculty.
However, without any destruction in the campus. The school smartly located the three buildings they want build in the insufficient space of campus. The new gym, radar hall and student center have a thing in common. Since there is not much land availuabe for the them, they all takes the advantage of the depth of the ground to maintain more interior spaces.
Senior project provides me with a wonderful learning oppotunity and education experience. I have learnt many things of making the architecture models. All I have learnt will be helpful for me to study architecture in college. And the making the model is a really fun process. I am really happy at the moment when I finished all the work.

The most difficult part of the project is to make the four buildings. In order to let the buildings look the same as the original model, I decided to make the houses by wood. There are two major problems that I have to solve before I start. First, I have to find the appropriate wood for model making. Second, I have to find the appropriate tools to cut the wood.
The first building I have made is the New Gym. It is the simplest one among the four buildings. It is a rectangle box with a flat roof, so it does not takes me a long to work on it.
The second building I have made is the Kingsley Hall. Many problems appeared when I work on this piece. This building has a very complicated roof structure. It is very difficult to cut the roof in one piece of wood and the sawing machine cannot work if the piece of wood is too big. I tried to cut the slope with the handsaw and knife, but the cut is not accurate and the quality of the building is way worse than I expect.
So I asked Mr. Webb for help. He suggests me to make one building by putting separate piece together. Since I am not allowed to use the sawing machine, he said he would cut the wood for me. And what I need to do is to do the drawing of the parts of each building. There are some advantages of doing it. First, is that I can use the sawing machine to make nice cut of the wood since the wood piece is smaller. Second, I can make complicated roof structure with this method. The other good thing is that if one part is not well made, I just need to redo the certain part instead of redo the whole thing. -
Building a fine achitectuer model of worcester Academy is a massive work, and it is also quite tuff for me, since it is my first time to make a model. So I asked Mr. Callahan, my senior project advisor for help.
We found an architecture model which was bulit 20 years ago by an architecture company in the basement storage of the Alumini House.It was built for a constuction plan. The company planed to tear down Kingsley, since it was old and in bad quality, and build up a new gym right on the spot of Kingsley Hall. They also planed to build serveral building on the center of squard. This is a significant plan that the buildings will connect the dorm and the academic and the dining halls. Student can go arcross the campus inside the building when the weather is in bad condition. Although, the school does not excute this construction plan 20 years ago, the arhictect model was presevred. It is a great luck for me, since I can use the fundation of this model and make revice on it to make the model looks like the campus today. So, I asked Mr. Callahan whether I can use this old version model to do my senior project, and he gladly agreed.

Intro:
Since I am going to major in architecture in college, I really want to do something related to architecture for my senior project. Having thought about many ideas, eventually, I decided to build a architectual model of worcester Academy. It is good chance for me to practice and prepare for studying architecture in college. Moreover, since Worcester Academy does not have a architectural model represnts the recent campus, it will be honor for me to do something for school before I graduate.
Perparation before start:
There are many information that I have to obtain before I start building the model.
1. Ichnography of the campus.
It must shows the exact position of every building in the campus in the 2-D.
2. The height of each buildings and the geographical map of the campus.
Worcester Acadmey is built on a hill beside the downtown Worcester. Most part of the campus is not on the flat plane. Kingsley Hall, the student center and Rader Hall are built on different land levels. In order to make a more accurate model in the 3-D, these data are essential.
3. The choose of material.
The material should be endurable, firm but moldable. Usually, the architecture model is built with wood. However, there are many kinds of wood. Some are hard and rough, which is used to make the bigger piece; some are soft and light, which is used to make the smaller one. Moreover, I also have to choose the appropriate material for the basement of model and the details (such as trees, grass, lamp post, etc.)
